How to change careers

The easiest career changes are adjacent moves that reuse much of what you already do. A teacher becoming a trainer or instructional designer, a support agent becoming a customer success manager — the gap is smaller than it looks when you name your transferable skills.

Find your transferable skills

  • Communication and presenting.
  • Managing stakeholders, customers or students.
  • Planning and running projects.
  • Analysing data or processes.
  • Leading or training people.

Rewrite your CV for the new field

  1. Open with a profile that names the new target role.
  2. Add a “relevant experience” section with the most transferable achievements.
  3. Translate jargon from your old field into the new field's language.
  4. Add courses, certifications or projects in the new field.

Explain the change in interviews

Give a short, positive reason — what pulls you towards the new field — and show you have already taken steps: a course, a project, volunteering. Interviewers want to see the change is deliberate.

Frequently asked questions

How do I show transferable skills on a CV?

Describe achievements in terms the new field uses and put the most relevant ones first. Rekruuter's Fit Check shows which of your experience transfers to a target job.

Should I take a pay cut to change careers?

Sometimes a small step back is needed, but adjacent moves often avoid it.

Do I need a new degree?

Rarely. Short courses, certifications and projects are usually enough for adjacent moves.
