How to tailor your CV to a job description

Sending the same CV to fifty jobs feels productive and gets almost nothing back. Sending a tailored CV to ten usually does better. Tailoring does not mean rewriting everything — it means putting your most relevant evidence where the recruiter looks first.

The 15-minute method

  1. List the top five requirements from the advert, in the order they appear.
  2. Rewrite your profile's first line to match the role title and your strongest matching skill.
  3. In each recent job, move the bullets that prove those requirements to the top.
  4. Swap your wording for the advert's where it means the same thing (“stakeholder management” vs “working with clients”).
  5. Cut or shorten bullets that do nothing for this job.
  6. Update the skills section so the advert's key tools appear first.

Transferable experience counts

If you are missing a listed skill, you may have done something close. Customer service experience maps to stakeholder management; running a college society maps to project coordination. Say the connection plainly in a bullet rather than hoping the recruiter makes it.

Let Rekruuter do the first draft

Choose a saved CV or upload one, pick the job, and Rekruuter plans the changes section by section. You approve or edit each rewrite before anything is saved as a new version.

Frequently asked questions

Is tailoring a CV worth the time?

Yes. Recruiters and ATS searches both favour CVs that clearly match the role, and a tailored CV makes interviews easier because your best examples are already prepared.

Should I keep the original CV?

Yes. Keep a master CV with everything, and save tailored versions per role or job type.

Can I tailor a CV straight from a job listing?

On Rekruuter's job board, run Fit Check on a job and then Tailor CV to create a version for that role.
