The application process, step by step
- Read the whole advert and list the three to five things the employer cares about most.
- Check you meet most of the essentials. Around 70% is usually enough to apply.
- Tailor your CV: put the matching experience first and use the advert's own words where they're true.
- Write a short cover letter if one is asked for — why this role, why you, and one piece of proof.
- Fill in the application form carefully. Answer screening questions with specific examples, not one-liners.
- Submit on the employer's own site where you can, and save a copy of the advert.
- Log the application and follow up politely after a week if you've heard nothing.
Mistakes that get applications rejected
- Sending the same CV to every job.
- Applying to roles where you meet few of the essential requirements.
- Leaving form questions blank or answering them in a single line.
- Spelling mistakes in your name, email or the company's name.
- A CV layout with tables, columns or images that screening software can't read.
- Applying days after the advert went up, when shortlists are already forming.
Where to apply
Apply directly on company career pages where possible — your application goes straight into their system. Job boards are best for discovering roles; referrals and recruiters are best for getting noticed. Most successful searches use all three.
