Country norms at a glance
- UK and Ireland: “CV”, up to two pages, no photo or personal details.
- USA and Canada: “resume”, usually one page, no photo, no date of birth.
- UAE and Gulf: photo and nationality are still common; include visa status and notice period.
- Germany and much of Europe: a more detailed CV (“Lebenslauf”), photo optional; Europass is accepted but not required.
- Australia and New Zealand: two to three pages, no photo, referees often listed.
Make overseas experience legible
- Describe each employer in a few words: industry, size, and anything the recruiter would recognise (clients, partners).
- Convert qualifications to the local equivalent where possible.
- Give numbers in the local currency or as percentages.
- Mention language skills with a level (for example IELTS 7.5).
Be clear about work permission
Recruiters filter quickly on right to work. If you need sponsorship, target employers that sponsor and answer visa questions honestly in the application form.
