What STAR stands for
- Situation: the context, in one or two sentences.
- Task: what you were responsible for.
- Action: what you did — the longest part, told with “I”, not “we”.
- Result: what happened, ideally measurable, and what you learned.
Worked example
Question: “Tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult customer.”
Situation: “At a telecom call centre, a business customer had been disconnected three times in a week and was threatening to cancel.” Task: “I was the agent who picked up his fourth call.” Action: “I apologised, took ownership instead of transferring him, got an engineer booked for the same day and called him back after the visit.” Result: “The fault was fixed, he renewed a two-year contract, and my manager used the case in team training.”
Common mistakes
- Spending most of the answer on the situation.
- Saying “we” throughout, so your role is unclear.
- Forgetting the result, or leaving it vague.
- Choosing a story that does not match the question.
