LinkedIn job search tips that actually work

LinkedIn works best when recruiters can find you and you apply to the right roles quickly. A few profile changes and a daily routine make a far bigger difference than clicking Easy Apply on everything.

Fix your profile first

  • Headline with your target role and key skills, not just “Student” or “Looking for opportunities”.
  • A clear, friendly photo and a simple banner.
  • An About section of four or five lines: what you do, what you are good at, what you want.
  • Experience entries that match your CV, with results.
  • Turn on Open to Work (visible to recruiters only if you prefer).

Search smarter

  1. Search the exact job title and set Date posted to the past 24 hours or week.
  2. Use location and remote filters, and experience level.
  3. Save searches and turn on alerts.
  4. Apply within the first few days — early applicants get more attention.

Use your network

  • Message someone at the company with a short, specific note after applying.
  • Ask alumni for a 15-minute chat, not directly for a job.
  • Comment thoughtfully on posts in your field to become visible.
